With the publication of the new edition of the SPIO Film Statistics Yearbook (Filmstatistisches Jahrbuch), the latest data on the film festival landscape once again complements the developments in the film industry in Germany.
While the German film festival sector was characterized by significant consolidation in 2022 and the associated heavy losses, this phase is now coming to an end in 2023 with 14 new entries and 24 market exits. Even though Berlin and Bavaria recorded the biggest declines, they continue to lead the way in terms of festival volume and the ranks among the federal states have only shifted slightly.
Online offerings initiated during the pandemic have since been consolidated by over 40 film festivals. These include major film festivals with an international programme as well as those specializing in German-language productions, numerous documentary and special interest film festivals that make a cultural film programme accessible outside of their own location in this way.
